East
Beach Cafe |
Littlehampton has received a great deal of publicity
as the home of the East Beach Cafe, a building on
the seafront designed by Heatherwick Studio.
The
building is a fully welded monocoque structure. The
building reflects its exposed location with a rough,
weathered appearance which Heatherwick describes as
being like a piece of weathered flotsam swept up onto
the beach. It was built in Littlehampton, with steelwork
by Littlehampton Welding Ltd and site work by Langridge
Developments, another local firm. The construction
of the cafe caused a stir in Littlehampton, with some
seeing it as an eyesore and others welcoming it as
a world class piece of architecture and a symbol of
regeneration. |

Redoubt
|
Littlehampton
Redoubt was built to protect the entrance to the River
Arun at Littlehampton on the south coast of England.
A 7“ gun battery was built on the East bank
perpendicular to the river in the 1750's, with guns
both facing up the river and out to sea. A small pentagonal
fort with 5 guns was built on the West bank in 1854.
The site, though fenced off, is viewable from a dune
path with a plaque giving historical details. Heavily
overgrown, the most obvious feature of the fort is
a Carnot wall.

The County Town of Sussex. Chichester
was formerly the ancient Roman fortification of Noviomagus
Reginorum, meaning 'new field'.The town became an
important residential, market and industrial centre,
producing both fine tableware and enamelwork. In the
2nd century the town was surrounded by a bank and
timber pallisade which was later rebuilt in stone.
Bastions were added in the early 4th century and the
town was generally improved with much rebuilding,
road surfacing and a new sewerage system. There were
cemeteries outside the east, north and south gates.
